I was reading that an obituary of Alfred Russell Wallace (1823-1913), codiscoverer with Darwin of the theory of natural selection (evolution) and one of the great thinkers and natural historians and biogeographers of all time and one of my heroes, said, “He only laid down his pen to die.” This is an epitaph I can relate to, as that’s what I’ll be doing from here on out. “One less set of footprints to worry about” wouldn’t be bad either.
