thanks facebook for connecting me with Paul Drapkin, a potter who lives on our former estate, Shideyevo, a magical place in eastern Ukraine, in the oblast of Poltava, where my grandmother and her brother Andrey Avinoff grew up, to which 84 pages of my book, Russian Blood are devoted. Take a look at these stunning fotos Paul sent me. Paul is from Dnieperpetrovsk and he says other young artists have been buying up the old thatch huts or khatas and moving into the area, which was being abandoned after the collapse of USSR and the state-supported kolkhoz system. It is not hard to see why my family were such nature lovers.
