After 15 seconds of silence which I thought I edited out, this starts with Seydou, by the Malian master musician Salif Keita, a tribute to the late fashion designer Seydou, who “showed the world African and especially Malian textiles. Who will dress us now ?” Salif sings. Then it goes to the first cut on the Berber singer Idir’s cd Shara Phone. Both contain the wail, as I call it, the universal sound of our aloneness, our spiritual longing and romantic/sexual yearning, which I have been collecting versions from all of the continents of in my 40 years of globetrotting.
