This is Louise Silberling’s second contribution to DVW. She is an Ithaca, NY-based writer, editor, and sociologist. She has worked in the U.S. and abroad with rural communities seeking to improve their environments and to secure land rights. In Brazil she worked for a decade with social movements including rubber tappers, quilombos, and artesanal fishermen, and with the international donor community and government agencies to help implement millions of acres of co-managed protected areas in the Amazon and in other culturally-rich, fragile environments.
