Hi,
Just returned from a week on Little Tupper Lake paddling, swimming and sleeping. This most beautiful lake must have a native name. Little Tupper certainly doesn't do it justice. In fact I couldn't bring myself to use the name so I took to calling it Lochalainn (beautiful lake in Gaelic). Any thoughts?

I read all your books when I was young. You were a hero of mine ( I would say you are a better writer than YoYo Ma is a cellist ). Now I have just finished rereading them and would say that your books have aged very well ( better than I have ). But why no new books since 1999?
OK, now I will read through your dispatches -- maybe I'll find the answer there. But it won't be the same. I can't curl up on my couch with a computer screen.

Caught whim of this site in Vanity Fair next to a pic of you, Alex in Peru wearing a great funky hat. When you mention that part of your soul resides in the Amazon, well I know you are a legend(good person). Interested in reading your books now and finding out more about how my journey will lead me to help.

Hi, Alex. Terribly long ago now, but I met you at Chase Twichell's and Russell Bank's place in 1986 in the ADKs. I am the Vermont poet. I was off to Breadloaf when we met, and I saw you and your wife and two of your sons at a book singing the following year or so in Burlington. I still live in Vermont and I've gone on to publish 9 books. I've followed your work and have always been intrigued by your writing. A great fan of Nabokov's, I am intrigued as well by your history with butterflies. I'm often in Montreal (I'm still living in VT) and if you've the time, I'd love to take you to lunch to hear even more what you are working on.
Warm regards, John Wagner

Dear Alex Shoumatoff: I came upon this website as a result of reading your article in this month's issue of Travel & Leisure. I just now found your article centered on Shideyevo from the New Yorker issue of 4/26/82 and was prompted again to write to you. The article brought back memories of my father's numerous stories about his own Afanassievka, where he grew up, near Ekaterinoslav. My father, Vladimir Stepanovitch Illiaschenko, counted himself a friend of Andrey Avinoff. I have several pencil drawings of my father by Avinoff, along with a number of photographs of Avinoff's work. My father would tell me stories about Avinoff's compositions and how he, my father, helped entertain Tagore when Tagore sat for a portrait. My father spoke of Avinoff with admiration. I hope you receive this email and that we will meet one day soon. With best wishes, Roxandra Antoniadis

We are having a meeting with Jane Goodall when she comes to visit with Cheeta the Chimp the first week of Oct. With the loss of Steve Irvin, the wildlife warriors need to redouble their efforts to maintain wildness on the planet.
When will we see the Rhawanda book out?
I see there hasn't been much activity in the guestbook. Whatsup?

Alex, you do need to get here and do the story on Cheeta, he turned 74 this month, and is receiving an award from the Spain Film Society for Comedy. Where has all the activity gone?
